Why Data Science?

Back in march, before Covid-19 hit the United States, I was excited, planning on graduating from college and entering the workforce. Having had a few internships with a wealth management company and a derivatives exchange, I thought that after graduating I would be working in a “business’ kind of a field. In march, I thought I’d be entering the greatest employment market in the history of the United States. Then Covid-19 hit and my school went completely online. Not only was my school online, but everything was online. The employment market was now nonexistent and I was just stuck at home. In June, I graduated from CUNY Queens College with an economics degree and that was it. All I had then was time. With unlimited time, all I did was think. Having all this time made me think about how I was not passionate about ‘wealth management.’ I was not passionate about ‘economics.’ I wanted to work in a field I was passionate about. The question is, ‘what is Mathew Katz passionate about?’ I finally decided that I would turn my hobby into my future. My favorite thing in the world is baseball. Now the next question is ‘how can baseball be a job?’ I decided to combine my skills in math with my passion for baseball. I wanted to be a Sabermetrician. Sabermetricians collect and recapitulate data from in-game baseball activity to answer specific questions. My goal is to use advanced machine learning techniques to enhance the ability to quantify the game of baseball. In order to do this I decided I needed to learn Data Science and doing research online, I found ‘General Assembly.’ They had the perfect data science intensive course that I could take online while waiting out Covid-19. That is where I am now. Follow me on this journey!
